Get to Know the Weathering Test Standard Test Procedure now!

2 minutes read

ISO 4892-2:2006 is a widely recognized international standard for weathering testing of materials, which outlines the general principles and procedures for simulating accelerated weathering using an exposure to xenon light sources. The weathering test method is used to evaluate the resistance of materials to sunlight and other environmental factors that may cause degradation over time.

Methology

The test involves exposing samples of the material under test to a controlled climate environment that simulates outdoor weathering conditions such as sunlight, water, elevated temperature, and humidity. This is achieved by exposing the test material to a controlled cycle of light and dark periods with additional cycles that can be added to adjust the temperature and humidity of the weathering chamber. The test duration can vary depending on the material and the intended application of the material with the option to extend or shorten the exposure periods in agreement with the client.

Principles & Protocols

ISO 4892-2:2006 specifies the general principles and testing protocols for sample preparation, test conditions, and evaluation of test results to ensure that the testing procedures, calibration, and measurement of results are consistent and accurate for different types of materials. The results obtained from these tests can be used to determine the susceptibility of different materials to weathering and aging and a quick, low-cost method for predicting the performance of materials in the intended outdoor environment.

This ISO standard is widely used in the automotive, aerospace, building and construction, and outdoor industry sectors, as well as for testing paints, coatings, plastics, and textiles.
